Made in an Old World style with moderate extraction, this wine displays a balance of complex aromatics and flavors including plenty of ripe black fruits and candied fruits along with hints of sandalwood and earth.

Immediately on entry, the wine is soft and quite tannic, full flavoured, with a decisive presence in the mouth and a complete and satisfying retronasal sensation.

Aromas of raspberry, strawberry with bramble.  On the palate this is a full body wine, ripe, with mulling spices and baking spice, structuring acidity with a soft and round mouthfeel.  This wine is not rich although it has Christmas spices, it is fresh style.

Aromas of stewed berries and touches of smoke and mineral lead to more ripe berries on the palate including plums, cherries and dried strawberries. This is medium-plus in body with ripe/integrated tannins and a lingering minerality on the finish.

This wine smells like new oak with mint, cinnamon and other spices with old leather notes. The palate is equally complex as the aromas suggest with licorice, chocolate covered cherries, black pepper, and black cherry. The texture is structured with the young tannins and dark fruit with medium acidity. This wine needs a steak!

Aromas are predominantly red fruited–cherry, raspberry, plum and spice box. There’s some fresh fig as well as spiced sweet cherry. This is a seamlessly textured wine with fine tannins. It’s medium-plus in weight with raspberry and raspberry coulis along with bramble; juicy acidity keeps it balanced.

More toast and macerated red cherries to finish. It is medium plus and drinking well now.  This is a classic, example of Chateauneuf. 

Aromas of mulling spices and Moroccan souk spices combine with dark berries, tar and smoke to entice you to this Pinot Noir. It is between medium and full bodied with considerable concentration, yet it is not heavy. This delicious red opens with deep aromas of leather, cigar box and red fruit. Plush flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and pomegranate lend a touch of fruit sweetness that is a nice counterpoint to the soft, chewy tannins.

The grape Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Aromas of grilled plum, blackberry, black currant and a little bark can be found on the nose. This medium-weight wine has flavors of black plum, cherry, and a hint of purple fruit. It is nicely balanced with medium acidity and sleek tannins.

Aromas of dark fruits, especially black currants, join with dark chocolate and light smoke on the nose. On the palate, this well-balanced wine combines black currants with baking spice, chocolate, toast, coffee, violet and vanilla notes. This stays fresh with its juicy acidity and the tannins are quite velvety. A classic, well-made example.

Aromas of red and black cherry, spice and cocoa. On the palate notes of blackberries, black pepper, cherry and plums are supported by the fine tannins. This medium-plus body wine is elegant with a silky texture. 

This non-vintage red blend combines fruit-driven young wine with more mature reds. It begins with aromas of cooked red and black fruits, toast, tobacco, spices, roasted red peppers and herbs. It then  shows off well integrated cherry and currant fruit, toast, cinnamon, baking spices, sweet tobacco leaf and cigar box on the palate. This is ripe, but not jammy. It's just over medium weight with moderate acidity. A very good value!

This is medium to fuller bodied with fresh blackberry, black cap raspberry, bittersweet chocolate, tobacco and graphite. Lifting acidity and integrated acidity make this a wonderful food wine.

Aromas are of red cherry, black cherry, plum, prune, rosemary and cinnamon. The palate gives complex flavors that include black cap raspberries and blackberries, along with cinnamon and cedar spice, Italian herbs, wood notes and a sweet smokiness. The finish in this delicious "baby Barolo" is long and structured.

A classically made dark fruited Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa power couple Andy Erickson and Annie Favia. The nose is incredibly complex with cassis, plum, cola nut, black cherry, black pepper, and espresso. In the mouth the wine is well balanced and combines the fruit further with dark chocolate integrated fine tannins. While delicious now, it will continue to evolve in the cellar and shine fully in 2 - 5 years!

Les Hérétiques is a rustic wine, speaking strongly of its terroir. The nose offers spice, cedar, and black cherry fruit, and touches of iron/earth. The tannins are quite present but well-integrated with more black cherries, spice and a lingering meaty quality.

From the producer: Lynch-Bages 2015 has a brilliant, deep colour with purple hues. Its nose clearly expresses aromas of cassis and dark fruit, mixed with the empyreumatic notes that come with ageing. It has a straightforward attack and a voluminous yet supple mid-palate. The wine has a marked but silky tannic structure, and a persistent finish illustrative of a particularly ripe vintage.

Raspberry, strawberry and red cherry with some garrigue. The palate is medium bodied but ripe and savory with soft dark chocolate, integrated smoke and some black pepper.

Aromas include ripe dark cherry, cinnamon, stewed tomatoes and wood spice. Silky tannins support this savory and robust wine; flavors echo aromas with touches of black fruits added. The finish is long with hints of stony minerality.

This co-fermented Chateauneuf is complex and appealing with scents reminiscent of potpourri, spiced plum, cassis and forest floor. There is something sleek and slick about the aromas, like fine chocolate and wild animal; think truffle. An opulent palate that is lovely, with black tea, bergamot, wild fruit of the forest, raisin, olives and forest floor. This is texturally attractive and nicely balanced with medium acidity, well managed tannins and a long finish.

Aromas are meaty and deep, offering black cap raspberries, blackberry compote, and smoke. In the mouth, this wine is deep black and sleek, dark fruited and savory (black currant and espresso) as well as textured (suave tannins and fresh acidity). All elements are well integrated, along with herbal/vegetal notes and touches of light earth mineral and stone. This medium-plus bodied wine is fresh and superbly balanced. What a beauty!

Ripe red fruits, mulling spices, and underbrush open on the nose. This medium-bodied wine is complex with round tannins and integrated acidity. Black cherry, black caps, and herbed raspberry jam segue into light notes of underbrush and bramble on the finish.

Notes of blackcurrants, plums, Provençal herbs, tomato leaf and balsamic are found on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, with amazing black fruits and spice, the purity of its Mediterranean upbringing is evident in this wine. Aromas of licorice, and bright, macerated cherries and raspberries, along with a little savory note can be found on the nose. The palate is medium plus in body and ripe (nearly stewy), but not heavy. It gives red and black cherries and blackberries along with savory notes of herbs, bark and underbrush. With some air, everything comes together in this full-flavored, complex Spanish blend.

Rich scents of violets, rose petals, black and red cherries, and so much blueberry! Additional aromas of licorice, black pepper and minerality lead to flavors of  plums, balanced by structuring, fresh acidity and minerality.  It is medium body with a medium finish. From the Distributor: The nose opens on an array of refined ripe black fruit aromas, joined on airing by light toasted hazelnut notes. The palate has ripe black fruit notes found on the nose return on the rich and ample attack, while attractive spice and toast flavors bring remarkable complexity and intensity to the midpalate, underpinned by powerful tannins typical of Cabernet Sauvignon. Attractive aromas of ripe blueberry and raspberry compote greet the nose. The palate is clean and supple with well-integrated flavors of blackberry, plum, and blueberry skin. This wine is medium-bodied and well-balanced with subtle iron-mineral notes on the finish.

Notes of stewed dark berries and graphite unfold from the glass. Round tannins balance nicely with medium acidity while rich, ripe dark berries mingle seamlessly on the palate with coffee and dark chocolate flavors. Hints of graphite and pencil lead linger through the finish and add depth to the wine.

This medium-plus bodied wine shows nice ripeness and yet it also has freshness. There are notes of raspberry, cherry, cinnamon, garrigue and spices, and some acidity keeps it lifted. One can drink it now or enjoy it until 2030.

This wine is composed of equal parts sweet, ripe berries and stony minerality. There is a light earthiness, integrated tannins, refreshing acidity and very good density. It's perfectly balanced! Fruit of blueberries, blackberries, plums and black raspberries mix with some forest bramble. This is indicative of the Northern Rhone (winery in Cornas), but it's composed of Gamay.

This is a very aromatic wine, with fresh dark cherries and plums and a touch of pepper and bark. In the mouth, this is juicy, fruity (raspberries, figs, plums), and well structured by round tannins. It is complex, with a touch of savory dried herbs and woodsy notes, hints of coffee and chocolate, and a great mouthfeel. It’s definitely food-oriented, though it is also pleasurable alone.

The 2019 Sinister Hand displays spicy, dark, and savory characteristics. The exuberant nose has raspberry aromas with a hint of vanilla, while the lively palate has a soft juicy texture and a well-balanced acidity. Chewy tannins, black cherry, and a hint of toasty French oak round out the vibrant finish.

A medium bouquet of red currants and cherries with cooked or concentrated raspberries and earth. The palate is sleek and supple with cherry, soil and plum. This wine is super fresh and yet deep with very fine and complex tannins and structure.

One of the leading domaines in Bandol, Domaine Tempier is, without a doubt, the most visible producer from the appellation in the U.S. marketplace today. I think this is well-deserved (and a good thing for Bandol), as the wines are at the top of the hierarchy in terms of quality. The estate has been in the Peyraud family for generations and has a long, storied history that’s beautifully documented in Kermit Lynch’s newsletters and book, Adventures on the Wine Route (an absolute must read for any wine lover). Secondary flavors of licorice, black cherry, chocolate, lead, blueberry and a touch of black pepper. The Zorzal Malbec is well-integrated and extremely enjoyable.
