"92 POINTS - The 2014 El Nido is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon from 35-year-old vines and the rest Monastrell from ancient vines fermented in the same way as Clio, starting in open-top, 4,500-liter stainless steel tanks with neutral yeasts and finishing in brand-new French and American oak barrels, where it also goes through malolactic. Aging in those new barrels lasted for almost two years. This is always quite ripe, and the Cabernet never shows any pyrazines or herbal aromas; there are plums, blackberries and a balsamic touch. This is full-bodied, powerful, concentrated and generously oaked. A subtle nose with a range of red fruit and some herbal-stemmy notes. The palate offers tart red and black berries with savory herbs on the earthier finish of this medium-bodied wine.

Fragrant notes of black caps and violets on the nose. The palate has nice richness and concentration with macerated raspberry and cherry flavors. The wine is savory and intense with baking spice and anise lingering on the longer finish.

Bodegas El Nido was founded in 2002 and is part of the Gil Family Estate. The vineyards are comprised of 64 acres of old vine Monastrell, and 45 acres of 2- year old Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged in barrels for about two years. This wine is big, complex and generous.

One of the leading domaines in Bandol, Domaine Tempier is, without a doubt, the most visible producer from the appellation in the U.S. marketplace today. I think this is well-deserved (and a good thing for Bandol), as the wines are at the top of the hierarchy in terms of quality. The estate has been in the Peyraud family for generations and has a long, storied history that’s beautifully documented in Kermit Lynch’s newsletters and book, Adventures on the Wine Route (an absolute must read for any wine lover). This medium to fuller-bodied blend from old vines offers rich, berry-forward notes with subtle, integrated touches of spice and smoke. It’s characterful, but not overdone, so you can enjoy it immediately, with or without food.

Notes of extracted darker berry fruit, kirsch, black cherry, and plum. A touch of almond skin, garrigue and light barnyard notes. It is medium in body, with fresh acidity and rich concentration.

Complex, savory aromas of red and black berry, cocoa, cola spices, smoke and iron-like minerals entice on the nose. Flavors on the palate are well-integrated and echo the aromas ending with a long, spicy-vanilla finish.

Aromas of warm earth, black currant, and dark cherries invite you in to this Rhone classic. Fuller-bodied with refreshing acidity to balance on the palate. More ripe dark fruit notes include cooked berries and some savory warm earth flavors with touches of dark chocolate and smoke.

This co-fermented Chateauneuf is complex and appealing with scents reminiscent of potpourri, spiced plum, cassis and pressed flowers. There is a seduction about the aromas, like fine chocolate and wild animal; think truffle. It offers an opulent palate that is lovely, with blueberry, black currant, cooked plums, spice box, black tea, violets and forest floor. There are also hints of minerality and light toast joining with the ripe fruit. This full-bodied, flavorful red still offers "relief" and a sense of freshness which creates balance in the wine. It is texturally attractive and structurally balanced with medium acidity, well managed tannins and a long finish. 

Aromatic, sweet and fruity with strawberry preserves, grapes, and minerality. The texture is balanced and restrained for Rasteau with potpourri, minerality and red cherries.  This wine’s restraint and supple tannins make it an ideal food partner.

On the nose, this red blend reveals attractive raspberry compote and stewed fruit, along with touches of bramble. The medium-bodied palate is composed of beautiful dark fruit and mineral notes with balanced acidity and silky tannins. It finishes with luscious plum flavors.

The nose is exhuberant with raspberry and stovetop fruit, as well as vanilla. The palate is rich and vibrant with sweet berry fruit, blackberry jam and light smoke. This is medium plus in body with fresh acidity and round tannins. Very satisfying and a great value.

Aromas of fresh raspberry, plums, and red cherry mingle with cinnamon and clove. A somewhat herbal palate follows, with smoke and red fruit notes. The well-balanced tannins and acidity are a result of large barrel oak aging, softening the palate while keeping everything fresh.

This lovely blend opens with alluring notes of plum and warm earth. On the palate, fruits of red and black cap raspberry and cassis join with violets and warm earth in a perfectly balanced wine that is approachable and satisfying. Medium to medium plus in body with juicy acid and easy, fine tannins-- this wine is ripe, but not heavy at all. So delicious!

Aromatic stovetop fruits with baking spices and barn notes lead to a medium plus bodied palate with notes of blueberry compote, dark chocolate, Moroccan spices and cherry preserves. The texture is velvety, with finely integrated acidity and a long, warming finish. This wine is dry, but ripe, sleek, yet rich. Enjoy on its own or with red meats, tomato sauce or Mediterranean fare.
