Tasting Notes

The wine offers medium aromatics of fresh blackberry and cassis, black plum and cherry, along with savory earth, wood, smoke, and cedar notes.  This is a dry wine, with noticeable structure, balanced by dark berry fruits, spice, and mushroom.  The fruit is not as rich as the aromas suggest; it’s one component among many.  The texture is silky, and the finish is fresh.

WINE INFORMATION

Wine has been made at this estate for 400 years. Four generations of the Xavier Milhade family have cultivated the vines on the property since 1938. Today the wines are made by one of the young stars of the right bank, Marc Milhade. Marc’s philosophy is more environmentally friendly work in the vineyard, and less intervention in the cellar. Since 2018, the estate is certified “High Environmental Value” Level III. This highest level of certification guarantees the management of numerous environmental parameters.

The name Recougne came from its recognition from King Henry IV in the early 17th century, when he stayed at the chateau he proclaimed that the wines were “Terra Recognita" or "recognized land".

Merlot is best suited to the gravelly clay terroir of the right bank of the Dordogne river, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The grapes are mostly destemmed, with up to about 10-15% whole cluster pressed for structure. Fermentation takes place in traditional cement vats followed by 15 months aging in large non-oak vessels before bottling with minimal filtration. All wines are bottled a minimum of two years after harvest.
