Tasting Notes

This succulent and unique Greek wine opens on the nose with light florality and honeysuckle, grapefruit, green tropical fruits and nectarine, followed by a round palate where mellow tropical fruits of candied pineapple, kumquat, white peach and mangosteen are balanced with refreshing minerality. The texture and concentration of this northwest Macedonian white is matched with a lifted acidity, a well-balanced finesse, and an exquisite finish with subtle bitterness of fruit peel and almond skin.

WINE INFORMATION

Alpha Estate is located at the northwest part of Greece, the Amyndeon in the Florina region. It was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and chemist-oenologist Angelos Iatridis, who, after years of experience in various locations of Greece, chose the Amyndeon region to create their own wine. Angelos is the winemaker. The estate rests on a 620 meter elevated northwest exposure and covers an entire area of 180 hectares (445 acres).  Two lakes neighbor the vineyard and help to contribute to a semi-continental climate. The soil is sandy, which helps to provide water drainage. The vineyard uses root zone drying irrigation to avoid extreme water deficits during the hotter summer months. This entails watering only half of the root system and leaving the other half dry.

Malagouzia, an ancient grape varietal that produces highly aromatic wines with a round and soft texture on the palate. This grape was considered extinct until 1970 and has since been propagated with popularity. The grapes for this wine are from P.G.I. Florina in northwest Greece resting atop Amynedeon. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel under temperature control and aged 2 months on the lees. This wine is produced from estate owned vineyards at 690 meter elevation on northwest facing vineyards.

Alpha Estate's vineyard produces wine from other native and nonnative varieties such as, Xinomavro, Mavrodapnhe, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, Montepulciano, Negro Amaro, Barbera, Malagouzia, Sauvigon Blanc, Chardonnay & Gewürztraminer.
