ABOUT THE WINE

CVNE (The Northern Spanish Wine Copmpany) was created in 1879 in Haro, the heart of La Rioja, by brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. To this day, the winery is still in the hands of descendants of the Asúa. Today, CVNE is composed by three wineries, Bodegas Cune, Bodegas Viña Real (in Rioja Alavese), and Viñedos del Cotino The first vintage of Viña Real wines was produced in the 1920s.  These are wines with a modern structure, balance and elegance, with a potential of long ageing in the bottle.

The Viña Real Crianza is made from hand-harvested and hand-sorted grapes from the Rioja Alavesa. After sorting, the grapes are destemmed and placed in stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation takes place for 10-12 days with temperature control between 26-28 º C. After this, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and it is tranfered to a combination of French and American oak barrels where it remains for 13 - 14 months. The wine is racked while in barrel every 5-6 months to encourage proper ripening and organoleptic evolution.

The Spanish wine term “Crianza” indicates wines which are at least in their third year, having spent a minimum of one year in cask and several months in bottle before they are released for sale.
