Tasting Notes

Tasca d’Almerita comprises 5 different wineries in Sicily, each with its own personality. One of these wineries is Tenuta Capofaro which Tasca d’Almerita purchased in 2001. Capofaro is a thirty-year old, 15-acre vineyard on the island of Salina which overlooks the sea. Tenuta Capofaro makes Didyme, the ancient name for the island of Salina, one of the Aeolian islands of Sicily. Capofaro means “lighthouse cape” and indeed, an important lighthouse stands next to the vines, guiding the numerous inter-island ferries and boats around the headland.

The soil there is volcanic and sandy and Malvasia is the dominant grape. Two massive, green hills dominate this beautiful island. They are covered with ferns, poplars, chestnut trees and indigenous Mediterranean vegetation such as caper bushes and olive trees.

This 100% Malvasia wine is harvested at peak ripeness, fermented in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, and aged on its lees.

Tasca d’Almerita is committed to beneficial environmental practices and is certified by SOStain and VIVA, two programs with organized measures of sustainability designed for Sicily.
