Tasting Notes

Bright, brambly, and savory aromas of ripe strawberry, charcuterie, baking spice, and dried herbs. On the palate this wine is juicy with notes of dark berries, cocoa, baking spice, and a hint of smoke. It is full body with refreshing acidity and a long finish.

GRAPES: A combination of wine from the 2019, 2018, and 2017 vintages. Primarily Zinfandel from 2019,benefiting from barrel aged Syrah and Petite Sirah from 2018 and 2017. Small amounts of Grenache, Barbera, and Carignane complete the wine

WINE INFORMATION
Marietta Cellars was founded in 1978 by Chris Bilbro, inspired by his aunt Marietta and uncle Armé.  For the first 20 years, Chris worked as a one-man-show at Marietta Cellars, sourcing fruit, making and selling the wine, and eventually growing the business to the point where it had its own winery facility and 30 acres of vineyards. He created Old Vine Red in the early 1980s, and non-vintage red wine made from sourced California grapes. What initially may have appeared to be a strange business decision eventually became an iconic California wine.

Now retired, Chris’ two sons, Jake and Scot have taken over the business, purchasing the winery 2012. Family and community have been the pillars of Marietta Cellars since the beginning, and the Bilbro sons continue to promote these values in the wines that they produce today - all red blends named in honor of their family members.

Affectionately known as “OVR,” Marietta’s Old Vine Red is a proprietary red wine made to replicate the field blends of the old vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. It was first produced in 1982. Predominantly comprised of fresh, young Zinfandel, OVR gets its backbone from Petite Sirah with about three years of age in neutral barrel, and its savory component from Syrah with about two years of age in neutral barrel. Occasionally, other varieties like Barbera, Carignan, or Grenache will be blended in to complement the other elements. The goal is always to create an enjoyable table wine made with integrity that combines pure fruit, a supple mouth feel and a rich, solid structure.
