Tasting Notes

This is extremely aromatic and flavorful. It smells of ripe black cherries, cocoa powder, black pepper, and earth. The flavors are similar, lovely and mouth filling, with pleasant dark chocolate, an array of berries and cherries, tea notes, and bramble, with a round but not viscous texture.

Krisi Raymond is the fifth generation of her family to grow grapes and make wine in Napa. It all started in 1876, when her great-great grandfather Jacob Beringer together with his brother Frederick, started their eponymous winery just north of St. Helena. The next generation continued, and weathered Prohibition by producing wine used for medicinal and sacramental purposes. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Roy Raymond began his wine career at Beringer Brothers winery, and three years later married Jacob’s granddaughter Martha Jane Beringer. Their two sons, Roy Jr. and Walter, went to work in the family business after finishing college. When Beringer was sold in 1970, the Raymond family used their share of the proceeds to buy 90 acres of prime vineyards just south of St. Helena and founded Raymond Vineyard & Cellar in the heart of Zinfandel country. They planted several varieties and crushed their first vintage in 1974. Almost 30 years later, Krisi Raymond stepped out on her own as grower and winemaker, starting with one acre of Sauvignon Blanc and purchasing fruit from select Napa growers. She makes small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc, her favorite varieties.
