Tasting Notes

Attractive aromas of strawberry preserves and red currants with some savory Italian herbs. This is a medium bodied wine that is nicely ripe for Piedmont. The flavors are concentrated strawberry, cherry, and raspberry compote with pleasant acidity. There is supple tannin structure and baking spice. We think this is the best it has ever been!

WINE INFORMATION

Enrico Scavino manages his family's estate with his two daughters Enrica and Elisa, bringing world-class Barolo and Piedmont wines to the table. They are the third and fourth generation of the family to farm the estate, which was founded by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo.  Enrico started to work in the winery full-time in 1951 when he was just 10 years old. Today he manages 29 hectares of vines in the Langhe hills.

Winemaking at the estate has evolved over time—but the one constant, even from the days of Enrica and Elisa’s grandfather, was hygiene: the cleanliness of the winery and health of the grapes remain paramount. Technology has had its influence: Enrico recalls working the vineyards with oxen and horses, and said of the purchase of his first tractor “I couldn’t have been happier if my father had gifted me a Ferrari!” In 1993, rotofermentors arrived at the estate, and between 1996 and 1999, Slavonian casks were replaced with French oak—but barriques here were always and only used for the first 10 months of aging to help fix color before the wines were transferred to larger oak botti.

The Vino Rosso is a blend of Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Merlot. The grapes from the younger vines of the estate are combined together to offer a fresh, aromatic and charming wine.  This wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tank. It is labeled as “vino rosso” because the rules of the Piedmont do not allow for blending of these four grapes in one wine.
