Aromatics of black cherry, raspberry, red licorice, garrigue and dry leaves can be found in this wine. This is juicy with sweet ripe fruits, especially lots of red cherry and blackberry mixed with light spice and herbs. It is medium weight, clean and supple, with bright acidity. Very tasty and versatile; this is one of the best values of the year!
This estate is run by Jean-Mark Autran and his wife, Sophie. It was started by Jean Marc’s great grandfather, Alphonse Vautour. The winery is located in the Cotes-du-Rhone Villages AOC of Sablet, a small village just next to Gigondas in France’s Southern Rhone Valley. Sablet refers to “sable,” the French term for sand. The Autrans own 30 hectares of vineyard parcels on various soil types in Sablet, Gigondas, and general Cote-du-Rhone sites. Their daughter Maude has begun assisting with the business and intends to follow in her parents’ footsteps.
Grapes for this wine come from 45-year old vines (practicing organic) which are hand harvested. Natural yeast is used for fermentation and temperatures are strictly controlled to preserve aromatics. The wine ages in concrete tanks for 6-12 months in order to produce a pure, unadorned wine.
