This is a sophisticated and aromatic Pinot Grigio with notes of peach, apricot, nectarine and pronounced minerality. The palate is lively, concentrate, complex and elegant. The aromas translate onto flavors with the stonefruit upfront and layers of limestone and chalk.
WINE INFORMATION
Cantina Kurtatsch has been making wine since 1900. It is named for the town near which the 190-hectare property is located, in the foothills of the Italian Alps. It is a cooperative of 190 small holders, each farming a single hectare for the co-op, cultivating and harvesting their plots gently and manually. The plots sit at elevations from 220-900 meters. The lower plots, among the warmest sites in the Alto Adige, are well suited to the cultivation of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot; soils here are very similar to those of Pomerol in Bordeaux. Those at higher elevations, 450-900 meters, have limestone-dolomite soils, are cooler and airier, and produce white grapes. Throughout, the vineyards are characterized by significant diurnal temperature shifts and an Alpine-continental climate with Mediterranean influences. The co-op is run by president Andreas Kofler, who took the reins at the age of 32, the youngest ever in the history of Alto Adige co-operatives. Othmar Doná is the winemaker.
Grapes for this wine are sustainably grown and harvested by hand. The must ferments in stainless steel with selected yeasts, and ages for a minimum of five months on the fine lees.
