Aromas of red fruits, dried herbs, and a hint of spice introduce this red blend. The palate is medium weight with a long finish and detectable acidity. The flavors are red and black cherry, red licorice, and some mulling spices. This is very smooth and easy to drink.

WINE INFORMATION

Portugal, though small, produces an amazing diversity of wines.  The maritime climate, with warm summers and cool, wet winters, is moderated by proximity to the Atlantic. Since Portugal’s vineyards evolved in isolation, they are filled with a treasure trove of indigenous varieties. There are 33 DOCs and about 8 IPR (similar to IGP). This wine comes from the Lisbon DOC, an area of hills and valleys with a variety of microclimates and soil types.

José Neiva Correia was one of three founders of DFJ Vinhos in 1998; today he is the sole owner and chief winemaker. The company has 30 brands, makes over 100 different wines, and produces 10 million bottles a year, 99% of which is exported. He owns a 250-hectare estate and contracts for 600 ha more; all vineyards are farmed sustainably, with no commercial agrochemicals.

Grapes for this wine were harvested mechanically, destemmed, macerated on the skins, and yeast was added.  Fermentation at up to 30°C occurred for the first 2/3; the temperature was dropped to 20°C for the last 1/3. During the entire process, the wine was pumped over twice daily. Malolactic fermentation took place over 30 days, with regular punch downs. The wine was aged in 225-L Allier oak barrels for six months and in bottle for three months before release.
