Tasting Notes

Creamy floral aromas lead to lemon, nectarine and melon.  Medium -bodied with refreshing acid to balance. Flavors echo the aromas with more citrus and orange notes with a touch of melon rind.

WINE INFORMATION

Bodegas Naia was established in 2002 in La Seca, home to Spain’s original plantings of Verdejo; their first wine was released in 2004. The winery owns 23.5 hectares of vineyards ranging from 2 to 40+ years old, and sources fruit from local growers whose vines range from 80-130 years.

Rueda is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) for wines located in the Commune of Castilla y Leon. The DO is centered around the town of Rueda, in the province of Valladolid about 170 km northwest of Madrid. The land is a flat high plain at an altitude of between 600 and 780 m above sea level. The River Duero flows through the area from east to west. The climate is continental (long hot summers, cold winters) with a certain Atlantic maritime influences. Temperatures vary widely and can drop below freezing in winter and can reach 100°F in summer. There is a risk of frost, freezing fog, high winds and hailstones in winter/spring. On the other hand, there is only a very small possibility of drought. Normally it rains in spring and autumn, with an average rainfall of 400 mm/year, while the vines receive 2,700 hours of sunlight per year. It is known primarily for its quality white wines based on the Verdejo grape.

Bodegas Naia’s Verdejo vineyards are located in the district of La Seca.  Laura Sanz is their winemaker. The winery hand harvests its grapes at night to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. Once inside the winery, the grapes are de-stemmed and sorted by hand. These grapes are then refrigerated in a chamber so that the aromatic qualities of the skin infuse into the pulp of the grape. Then, they undergo a pre-fermentation maceration. Naia is crafted from 30-40-year-old vines of Verdejo planted on Calcareous clay over layers of sandy clay and pebbles.  The wine ferments in a combination of stainless steel (70%) and the rest in a combination of large (10,000-liter) oak barrels and small (500-liter) oak barrels. It remains on the lees for 4 months.
