Very aromatic with red fruit, including red currants and other berries along with hints of high-quality maraschino cherries. The palate is similar with more red fruits, beautiful minerality and moderate acidity. It is medium bodied with a longer finish.
WINE INFORMATION
Bodegas Jorge Ordóñez Málaga, located in Ordóñez’s hometown, was founded in 2004. A partnership between Ordóñez and the Kracher family of Austria, the winery was founded with the goal of resuscitating the centuries long tradition of winemaking in Málaga, which was destroyed by the phylloxera plague in the 19th century. Jorge Ordóñez is a famous wine importer and winemaker. He was the first to import Spanish wines into the US and gave them most of the popularity of today.
This wine is the result of Jorge Ordóñez Malaga's goal to produce a quality Garnacha from the mountains of Málaga, from a single vineyard planted with vine cuttings from Calatayud. Like many of the vineyards in the Axarquía, it is planted on extremely steep decomposed slate and quartz slopes. This vineyard of Garnacha faces inland, away from the Mediterranean. The combination of the steepness and exposition means very little exposure to sunlight, resulting in a slow and delicate ripening of the Garnacha that yields a fragrant, delicate, lower alcohol, and ethereal wine. The minerality from slate soils and complexity of the old clones from Calatayud mark the wine substantially.
The vineyard is dry farmed with gobelet (vaso) trained vines. It is cultivated hand and organically with minimal intervention. Many of the vineyards are planted directly into the rock (slate) immediately after the phylloxera. After harvest the primary fermentation occurs in open-top fermenters; spontaneous malolactic fermentation follows in neutral 600L French oak demi-muids.
