Tasting Notes

Aromas of fresh and smoky blackberries and plums. On the palate, this is medium weight or slightly less in body, with flavors of black currants, blackberry seeds, cherries, earth and smoke. It is medium in acid with fine tannins. This red is silky and fresh… the ultimate picnic wine! Note: This is a liter bottle.

WINE INFORMATION

Austria boasts 4000 years of wine making history.  Unfortunately, the market for Austrian wine was almost completely destroyed in 1985 when it was discovered that a few wine brokers had adulterated their wines with diethylene glycol (the active ingredient in antifreeze).  Thankfully, the scandal compelled Austria to establish strict quality standards for their wine and as a result, the country has earned a reputation for dependably high quality wines.

Weingut Berger is a relatively small father-son estate of 18 hectares that is located in the Kamptal-Kremstal area of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich).  The red wines are grown at the top of the hills where more humus-rich soils dominate and give the wines length, body, spice, and lush fruit. Vineyards are maintained according to the latest organic guidelines. In the winery, efforts are made to preserve the fruit character by using cultured yeast in combinations with slow fermentations that are temperature controlled.
