WINE INFORMATION
The history of wine production in Morocco goes back more than 4,000 years, with much wine being made for personal use until the 19th century. Domaine des Ouleb Thaleb was founded in 1923; they planted vines outside of Casablanca and their first harvest was in 1927. Their vineyards are now the oldest continuously producing in Morocco. The company has also produced wines under the name “Thalvin” since the 1960s.
Syrocco is produced by famed Rhône vigneron Alain Graillot, who encountered these vineyards while bicycling in the Zenata region of Morocco between Casablanca and Rabat. He stopped off at Domaine des Ouleb Thaleb, 40km inland from the Atlantic Ocean in the lee of the spectacular Middle Atlas Mountains. A conversation with the Domaine's oenologist, Jacques Poullaine, and a close look at sites in Rommani and Benslimane convinced Graillot of the potential for producing highly elegant Syrah.
Syrocco is made in an old-world style from some of the estates younger vines, farmed without pesticides or fertilizers and plowed, weeded, and harvested by hand. The grapes are destemmed, then ferment in concrete vats. The wine ages in large, older French oak barrels that Graillot has sourced from François Frères in Burgundy.
