Mount Etna is located on the eastern side of Sicily a bit north of the center in the province of Catania. It’s one of the few places on the island that gets even moderate rainfall. The volcano is still active, and has been expressing itself quite loudly the last few years. The 21st century saw the resurgence of viticulture on Etna, with the reclamation of many ancient sites. Phylloxera was never so bad here, thanks to the black volcanic soil that was an inhospitable host to the bug; today, there are many vineyards that boast 80+-year-old vines. Huge diurnal temperature swings allow for a cool-down period at night, promoting a surprisingly even ripening process, but the region is still harsh.
Tenuta Tascante is part of an umbrella of wineries owned by Tasca d’Almerita. The Almerita team grows grapes in five different estates in Sicily: Regaleali, Capofaro, Tascante, Whitaker and Sallier de La Tour.. Each of these estates has a story to tell, each one recounts a different Sicily. The name Tascante is a made-up word that blends the family name (Tasca) with the word Etna spelled backwards. The winery was established in 2007.
Buonora is Tenuta Tascante's white wine from Mount Etna's indigenous Carricante grape variety. Historically prized for its high acidity and abundant productivity, Carricante is a multi-facited grape that ripens late and gains complexity with ageing. Grapes for the Tenuta Tascanate Buonora aresourced from cool-climate vineyards on the north and east faces of the volcano's slopes.
