Very aromatic, with black cherry and blackberry, both with the sweetness of fresh fruit. There are light notes of fresh-picked oregano and a small touch of earth. The attack is off-dry, with small, fine, well integrated bubbles that are absolutely natural, very desirable and refreshing. Great black fruit, joined with red cherry and moderate acidity. The softness of the mousse keeps this light.
WINE INFORMATION
Lambrusco is an old grape, grown primarily in Emilia Romagna, as well as in the Piedmont. The name means “wild grape,” and DNA profiling confirms that it is indeed a domesticated version of wild cultivars. There are about 15 different varieties, with Lambrusco Salamino the most widely planted.
Quattro Mani is a project began in 2005 to showcase celebrity winemakers and the strength of Italy’s viticultural heritage and terroir. It first produced a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (2006) and a Barbera (2011); a Falanghina del Sannio and Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce were added in 2018. All wines are made from estate-grown fruit and vinified on the respective properties.
This wine comes from Medici Ermete, an estate that established a commercial winery about 130 years ago; the fourth generation took over when the popularity of Lambrusco was declining, so Alberto and Pierluigi Medici had to take drastic measures. They began extensive replanting, changing pruning and trellising practices, and lowered yields by more than 35% (significantly lower than the disciplinare required). The fifth generation, winemaker Giorgio, now runs the 80-hectare organic estate. Together with Otello Veronelli, he is part of the “Quattro Mani.”
Harvested in mid-September, the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks. The wine is lightly sparkling, frizzantino rather than frizzante.
