This aromatic white shows classic Torrontés aromas and flavors. The nose reveals honeysuckle, jasmine and fennel; it’s very pretty and balanced, not over the top, but attractively aromatic. This is medium plus in body, with good round density but no heaviness. Peach pit, flowers, apricot, apricot skin, and orange are very tasty in this clean, crisp, fresh, well-made white which ends with a persistent finish.
WINE INFORMATION
Abras is winemaker Karim Mussi’s venture in Salta. His family has been linked to the wine trade for over 30 years. He bases his winemaking on three pillars: innovation, terroir awareness and vineyard sustainability.
Abras are the natural trails or gates that allowed the local “Calchaquí” natives and later, the Incas to connect their vast empire. For them, Abras were a blessing from the “Pacha Mama” to which they would leave offerings. Those Abras permitted to create a famous route, that the Spaniard conquerors used to connect Lima, their capital city, with the port of Buenos Aires and also, to transport many natural resources through what they called “Camino Real”
The vineyards are located in Cafayate, a high altitude desert town in the province of Salta at 1,750 meters above sea level (5,700 feet elevation). This area is renowned for its amazing Torrontés and Malbec. Fruit is sustainably farmed from vines that are more than 30 years old, planted on alluvial soils at the bottom of the valley. The region is extremely dry, receiving less than 250mm of rainfall per year.
The wine is fermented to dryness in stainless steel tanks. Torrontés is typically an aromatic wine. This one walks a fine line in being remaining expressive, yet achieving balance. Torrontés makes up about 20% of all white wine sold in Argentina. Karim Mussi is the Winemaker/Owner of Abras Winery. He has five other wine projects in which he oversees winemaking. From the beginning, Karim has based his winemaking on three fundamental pillars: innovation, terroir awareness and vineyard sustainability.
