This sparkling rosé is appealingly refreshing with aromas of nectarine, peach, rose petals, and crushed rocks. The palate is dry with a creamy mousse texture and notes of peach, apricot, roses, watermelon rind, lightly unripe strawberries and a touch of tangerine peel.
WINE INFORMATION
The Pico Maccario Winery specializes in producing Barbera wine at its location in the town of Mombaruzzo in the heart of Piedmont’s Barbera d’Asti DOCG region. Brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario developed the Pico Maccario brand in 1997 after four generations of selling the family grapes to other wine producers. The estate consists of just over 100 hectares of vineyards, 88 hectares of which is dedicated to Barbera; the remaining plantings include small parcels of Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Moscato, Freisa and Favorita. At an average elevation of 180 meters, the vineyards contain medium-textured clay-based soils.
A prominent symbol of Pico Maccario Winery is the rose, featured in its wine labels and in the 4,500 rose bushes planted at the end of each vine row where the roses act as an indicator of vine-threatening diseases. (Pests and diseases typically first attack the rose bush before moving onto and damaging the grapes; thus, disease-ridden rose bushes signal the need to act immediately to prevent loss of grapes.)
After light pressing, the Barbera grapes undergo a brief cold soak maceration in skins directly inside the press. Subsequently, the wine juice goes through primary and secondary fermentation (via the Charmat method) in stainless steel and ages on lees for 5 months in order to give structure and body to the wine.
