This wine is sweetly aromatic, offering strawberry, raspberry, and a touch of orange peel. In the mouth, it is slightly frizzante, tingly fresh and dry, with juicy strawberry and dried herb notes as well as a touch of yeast Inness. Bright acidity provides lovely freshness. Because the wine is unfined and unfiltered, expect some sediment.
WINE INFORMATION
Naken is a creative project working with artisanal organic/biodynamic farmers to create “honest and profound” wines. Some of these families also produce other products—one has grown organic vegetables for 30 years, another also raises chickens and goats, another grows heirloom tomatoes and peppers. With regard to winemaking techniques, the growers and winemakers work as naturally as possible. They have agreed to use no stabilizers, no strong coolings, and no fining. Fermentation is done with native yeasts, and malolactic fermentation occurs naturally
Grapes for this wine come from the small town of Pamhagen in Burgenland near the Neusiedlersee, a large shallow lake that moderates the climate. This is what some would call an orange wine: white grapes are fermented on their skins for several days as though they were red, producing a delicate orange-rosé color, a creamy texture, and a higher concentration of tannins than a “normal” white wine.
FOOD PAIRING
Naken’s acidity works with lighter entrees, while its tannins allow pairing with bolder dishes. Fish, shellfish, and poultry pair well and can be liberally seasoned. Noodle and rice dishes are also good. Pasta with pesto or a cream sauce, rice stir-fry or risotto—all pair well.
