Tasting Notes

Fresh aromas of strawberry, shortcake, rhubarb, raspberry and slightly herbal note that balances with the creamy smells. The palate is clean, medium bodied with medium zippy acidity with watermelon and grapefruit.  More flavors of cream soda, ripe raspberry  with a lightly savory finish that balances the fruit forward flavors.

Yiannis Boutaris was a leading figure in the Greek wine world when he left the family company his grandfather founded in 1879 to start his own business, Kir-Yianni, some 22 years ago. (The name means “Lord John,” a nickname he acquired after several terms as mayor.) Located in northwestern Greece, Kir-Yianni specializes in Xinomavro, “acid black.” This brick-colored fruit is very finicky and difficult to grow. Its wines are somewhat brutal in their youth, being very high in tannins, but age quite well. Amyndeon produces Greece’s only PDO-designated rosé as well as sparkling wines made from Xinomavro.

Kir-Yianni has two 30+-year-old vineyards now run by Yiannis’ son Stelios. Grapes for this wine come from both estate and contract vineyards that the family manages. All grapes are certified sustainable. The fruit grows on poor, sandy soils at high altitude and are harvested manually at low yields. When they reach the winery, they are chilled to 11-14°C and destemmed. Two winemaking techniques are used: 90% of the fruit is fermented on the skins, 10% uses the saignée method, in which the juice is bled off. Maceration on the skins takes place under a blanket of CO2 for 12-48 hours, depending on grape quality, to avoid oxidation and the flattening of aromas and flavors. The wine ages for three months on the lees with thrice-weekly stirring before it is bottled.
