Tasting Notes

The nose offers spiced plum, a touch of licorice and olives, sweet wood and dried herbs. In the mouth, this wine is full bodied and flavorful. Deep red fruits, black currants, blackberry, and black cherry, as well as black olives merge with bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and tobacco notes. This has character and personality without being overbearing.

WINE INFORMATION

Antonio Argiolas founded the winery in 1937, with the first release in the 1938 vintage. Argiolas is generally regarded as Sardinia’s best and most promising producer, working primarily with indigenous grapes. Antonio was succeeded by his twin sons Franco and Giuseppe (vineyard manager); their children have now moved into leadership positions.

The name “Costera” refers to the hills on which the grapes are grown. Vineyards are located at 725’ asl, southeastern exposure, on pebbly calcareous-clay loam soils and were planted 1975-80. Harvest took place over 3-4 days, followed by a cold-soak maceration and racking to a 3-4-week fermentation in stainless steel. Part of the wine was aged 8-10 months in second-use French barriques, the rest five months in cement vats. The wine spent a month in bottle before release.
