Light aromas of wet stone/talc, stone fruits and white flowers on the nose. The medium-bodied palate offer peach and nectarine, minerals, and a touch of bitterness to balance the ripe fruit.
Red Tail Ridge Winery is owned by husband and wife team: Mike Schnelle (viticulturist) and Nancy Irelan (winemaker). It’s named for two red tail hawks that share the vineyard and surrounding forested area.
This 35 acre vineyard was the first LEED certified green winery in the Finger Lakes! This means that the winery and property was rated for water efficiency, energy, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design to be environmentally friendly. The building itself runs completely on geothermal heating and cooling that allows the winery to cut back energy use by over 50%. The system is incorporated in the floors and tank jackets of the winery allowing for controlled zone heating or tank chilling. Furthermore they take active measures in biodegradable cleaning products, recycled materials in the structure of the building, drainage ditches and an irrigation pond in the vineyard for run off, and a 8 foot hand built fence to deter wildlife as humanely as possible. The vineyard also uses compost and cover crops to ensure nitrogen rich soil and compete with the vines for water sources. The use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices monitors and prevents insect pests and disease pressure on vines. It is exceedingly difficult to be an organic farmer in the Finger Lakes but they utilize a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach in managing their vineyard.
