Aromatic with white grapefruit and some crunchy pear with persistent but not distracting floral tones. The palate gives some pear, herb and tart apple. The texture is round, creamy and medium bodied with medium acidity. This dry white drinks more like an Italian Pecorino than a Sauvignon Blanc.
WINE INFORMATION
Bodegas Naia was established in 2002 in La Seca, home to Spain’s original plantings of Verdejo; their first wine was released in 2004. The winery owns 23.5 hectares of vineyards ranging from 2 to 40+ years old, and sources fruit from local growers whose vines range from 80-130 years.
Just like it is in the Rueda appellation, Verdejo is the main grape at Bodegas Naia, with Sauvignon Blanc second, and Viura a distant third. Soils in Rueda are calcareous clay with a thin layer of sandy clay and cobbles on top. The climate is a mix of Mediterranean and continental; the latter’s dry, cold winters, hot summers, and large diurnal temperature differences dominate.
2020 was deemed an “excellent” vintage by the Regulatory Council, only the third in Rueda’s history.
Fruit for this wine comes from 25-35-year-old vines, harvested manually at night, usually beginning in early September. The fruit was sorted by hand, destemmed, and fermented in tank.
