Intensely aromatic, dominated by dark fruit, notably black currant and ripe blackberry. This is a fruit forward wine, but not a fruit bomb--it is intense and complex with fine tannins and some acidity providing structure. It is medium plus in body and length.
WINE INFORMATION
This wine was made and bottled for Descas Pére et Fils, a negociant established in 1861 in the heart of Bordeaux. It was technologically ahead of its time, using wagons and elevators to move grapes and wine. It remained in the same family until its sale in 1976 to the Merlaut family, who expanded its reach internationally. The name of this wine, “the stones,” reflects the soils of Bordeaux: rocky and well-draining, forcing vine roots to go deep and enhancing flavor.
The grapes are vinified traditionally with a 30-day maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel using twice daily pumpovers to extract color and flavor. It sees brief wood contact, about six months. The wine is only lightly fined and filtered, so it will throw some very fine sediment; let the bottle stand up for an hour before opening.
