This Chardonnay gives very ripe apple, vanilla, toast, hazelnut, creme brulée and creamy notes. It is rounded with a wonderfully soft texture.
Rich and savory, with notes of dried thyme to the ripe white fruit and spice flavors. The finish has plenty of custardy accents. Drink now through 2024. 3,994 cases made. — KM- Wine Spectator November, 89 points.
WINE INFORMATION
Mount Eden Vineyards is a small, historic wine estate located on a 2000-foot peak in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Founded by Martin Ray in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original boutique California Winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Mount Eden Vineyard has been continuously producing estate-bottled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay longer than anyone else in California. In 2007 they purchased the former Cinnabar vineyard on a neighboring mountain top which they christened Domaine Eden.
Mount Eden Vineyards also produces non-estate Chardonnays from the central coast, primarily Edna Valley. One of those great successes is this wine from the Wolff vineyard. Jean-Pierre Wolff farms 55 acres of Chardonnay vines in the bucolic Edna Valley, outside the town of San Luis Obispo. Originally planted in 1976, the vineyard is the oldest in the Edna Valley. Mount Eden has made Chardonnay from this site since 1985. These mature vines typically yield two to four tons per acre.
Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden. The fruit is pressed without crushing and entirely barrel-fermented in a mix of new, two and three-year-old French Burgundy barrels. This undergoes full malolactic fermentation and is aged eight months in barrel until bottling.
