Tasting Notes

An affordable Valpolicella with balance and character!  Lovely aromas of cherries and dried cherries lead to more red fruits on the palate, along with spice, leather, even notes of salami.  Balanced acidity with a touch of grippy tannin.

WINE INFORMATION

Valpolicella is a viticultural zone of the province of Verona in Italy.  It ranks just after Chianti in total Italian wine production.  The red wine know as Valpolicella is typically made from three grape varietals:  Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara.  All of the wines produced under the Valpolicella DOC are red and usually contain a sizable amount of the area’s most distinguished grape, Corvina. To bear the label Valpolicella Superiore the wine has to be aged for at least one year and has an alcohol content of at least 12 percent.

The Tommasi family has been making wine since 1902. From grandfather Giacomo’s tiny vineyard, the Tommasi estate has grown steadily over the course of the years and today extends over 135 hectares of vineyards. The estate is currently run by the 4th generation.

The grapes for this wine come from the Rafaèl vineyard. This 6-hectare vineyard is planted to Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, and it is located in the commune of San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico appellation. Traditional terraces were created on the slightly sloped soil to achieve optimal exposure to sunlight. The vines are trained using the traditional pergola style.

The grapes are hand-harvested. Once fermented, the wine spends 15 months in Sloavian Oak barrels of 65 hectoliters.
