ABOUT THE WINE
Located in historic Amador County in the Sierra foothills, Terra d’Oro is acclaimed for its elegant red wines and aromatic white wines, all crafted from their 800+ acres of sustainably farmed vineyards.
This is Amador’s first winery established after Prohibition, founded in 1970 by renowned winemaker Cary Gott; he released the first wines under the Terra d’Oro label in 1973. In 1981, Jeff Meyers joined the team as enologist, then became winemaker a year later. In 2017, Emily Haines joined as the winemaker and continues the tradition of producing wines lauded for their elegance and balance. Jeff Meyers serves as general manager and vice president of the winery.
The grapes for this wine come primarily from the estate’s vineyards in Clarksburg, with a small amount coming from select Amador vineyards. The Clarksburg AVA, located 30 miles west of Amador, is perfectly suited for growing aromatic white grape varieties. It enjoys cooler temperatures than surrounding regions thanks to the cool breezes that flow in from San Francisco Bay. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop depth in both flavors and aromas.
To retain the vibrant fruit and acidity, the grapes are harvested at night and fermented and aged in stainless steel. The wine remains on the lees for three months after fermentation to add complexity.
