Francois Cazin Cheverny Blanc 2021

Tasting Notes

This fresh and energetic white starts out with aromas of citrus, pear and hay. It’s a juicy and succulent wine with nicely dense, apple, quince, lemon and pear flavors joining stone and chamomile. Integrated acidity lingers on the long, herbaceous finish.

WINE INFORMATION

Cheverny is an appellation between Blois and Orléans in the middle Loire Valley created in 1993.  It also encompasses the smaller AC of Cour-Cheverny.  Cheverny is unusual in that all wines must be blends.  Cour-Cheverny is also unusual—the appellation is dedicated to the ancient Romorantin grape, a white.  Whites from Cheverny are comprised of Sauvignon Blanc with a mandatory amount of Chardonnay.  Created in 1993, Cheverny is one of the most recent appellations in the Loire Valley. The area, south of the Loire and abutting the marshy region of Sologne (the best hunting grounds in France), has produced wines since the 6th century.

François Cazin, a fifth-generation winemaker, took over the ancestral estate, Le Petite Chambord, in 1976.  Farming is sustainable and harvesting by hand.  The average age of the vines is 30 years.  Each grape varietal in this wine is handled in different ways.  Cazin tends vines of considerable age and the resulting yields are well below average in any given year. Since 1997, the wine has been bottled unfined and  unfiltered by gravity. 2020 was an ideal year with warmth and substantial crop size.

Soils tend to be heavy clay, mixed with either limestone or silica.  The climate is semi-continental.

The grapes are direct pressed and each parcel is vinified individually in stainless steel. Elevage takes place in enamel lined and concrete tanks before being blended together prior to bottling. Small amounts of S02 are added at press, after malolactic fermentation and at bottling.
