Venica & Venica Malvasia 2019

Tasting Notes

Notes adapted from the producer: Complex aromas ranging from yellow-fleshed fruit (apricot, peach, plum) to citrus notes of grapefruit and orange peel to the honeyed touch typical of acacia. All are entwined with a mineral streak. The palate is the perfect balance between a soft and creamy consistency due to the abundant glycerin to the freshness and minerality typical of this grape variety. Overall, this wine is harmonious with perfectly integrated alcohol. The persistence is long, consisting of citrus and floral notes.

WINE INFORMATION

This winery began in 1930 and over 90 years later, is led by the third generation, brothers Gianni and Georgio with excitement and business involvement from the upcoming fourth generation. It is located on the border of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and Slovenia in the Collio region. Of the family’s 40 hectares of vineyards (100 acres), 85% of them are cultivated with white grapes. These gorgeous sites are located on various hillsides, each with its own microclimate due to aspect, amount of sunlight, air flow, and elevation. Each terroir is composed of different soil types and the family seeks to explore and bring out the unique profile and reflection of each site.

A green approach is vital to the family’s vineyards. They continue to increase their sustainability commitment including biodiversity, sustainability certifications, cultivating bees, the use of solar panels, green manure and many other techniques that reduce their carbon footprint and promote a healthy environment.

This wine spends 20 hours on its skins, but is protected from oxidation during this time. It is aged  on its lees for five months in mostly (60%) large barrels (20-27 hectoliter) with the rest in stainless steel. Bottling takes place during full moons between March and June of the year following harvest.
