WINE INFORMATION
This is a wine that thrives on its elegance and delicacy rather than on power. It comes from southeastern Sicily between the Iblei mountains and the Mediterranean sea in the province of Ragusa. There the indigenous grapes Nero d’Avola (50-70% required) and Frappato (30-50% required) are blended in the Cerosuolo DOCG (Sicily’s only DOCG). Originally most of the grapes from the Valley were sent to France to beef up their wines. However, over six generations this family has been one of the pioneers to change that and then to act as ambassadors and benchmarks of the region.
These vineyards are located on what is known as the “Bidini Soprano” plateau. The soil structure is divided between clear red sand and dark, medium density earth with good depth. Grapes are farmed organically. The grapes ferment spontaneously in stainless steel using natural yeasts and then age in barriques and tonneaux (500 liter barrels) for 12 months, using 14% new oak. Bottle aging follows for at least nine months. The estate is now comprised of 80 hectares (nearly 200 acres) of organically-farmed vineyards, most of which is Nero d’Avola and Frappato with some Grillo and Chardonnay for white grapes.
