Aromas are minerally with red cherry and raspberry Structured with medium tannins and acid, this wine is still youthful but complex. Flavors suggest warm eath, iron, baking spice, and ripe red fruit. Pair with richer foods, decant, or cellar this delicious Tempranillo.
WINE INFORMATION
Ribera del Duero is a major wine region in Castilla y León in north central Spain that achieved DO status in 1982. It has a continental climate and short growing season; spring frosts are not uncommon. There are huge diurnal temperature differences in mid summer, with daytime highs sometimes reaching nearly 40°C and nightly temperatures as much as 20°C lower. Soil is argillo-calcareous over limestone bedrock, low in organic matter.
Pingus is produced by the visionary Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Peter arrived in Spain in 1993 to manage a new project, Hacienda Monasterio. While planting and developing Monasterio, he began to dream about the old vines he saw dotted around the Ribera del Duero landscape. By the 1995 vintage, Peter had found a group of old vines that spurred him to embark on his own project. He called it “Pingus,” after his childhood nickname. His vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since 2011.
After fermentation in steel or large wooden vat, the wines are raised in a mix of new and old French oak. Peter uses as little sulphur as possible.
