Tasting Notes

On the nose, aromas of baked apple combine with vanilla and yeasty/leesy notes. Flavors on the palate largely echo the nose. The wine is round and lightly creamy in texture with enough acidity to balance lemony-citrus fruit and apple skin with toasted marshmallow and vanilla bean.

WINE INFORMATION

Since 1924, Château de la Greffière has been a family estate belonging to the Greuzard family. Today, the 4th generation of the family works the Burgundy terroirs of the estate. The Château is located about 15 minutes from Mâcon in La Roche Vineuse, which translates from French into “vinous rock,” due to the extremely high content of limestone in the soils.

Château de la Greffière traces its history back to 1585 when the original wine fermenting cellar was built. The wine cellar had been added in 1789, followed by the construction of the castle in 1830. After acquiring and renovating the estate, the Greuzard family turned the vat room into The Vine and Wine Museum to highlight country life at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum features more than 2,000 tools used by winegrowers of previous generations: from blacksmiths to carpenters, and coopers to winegrowers.

The vineyard extends over 48 hectares across 6 towns bordering La Roche Vineuse. The Greuzard family focuses on four grape varietals: two whites (Chardonnay and Aligoté) and two reds (Gamay and Pinot Noir).  Chardonnay grapes for this wine come from 3 different vineyards planted with vines older than 50 years across a 2.5Ha area. After pressing, the wine juice ferments for 5 – 10 days in barrels at constant temperature. The wine ages on its lees in oak barrels – 10% of which are new, the remainder is up to 10 years used. This wine has twice earned a place on Wine Spectator's annual "Top 100" list.
