Tasting Notes

This is a particularly crisp and racy Soave with plenty of minerality and finesse. Notes of lemon lime, chalk, herbs, melon and green apple. The palate delivers medium body and acidity with peach, apple and some toasted nuts. The finish has great length with both roundness and good intensity.

WINE INFORMATION

Soave comes from the Veneto region of Italy, specifically in zones around the city of Verona. Garganega is the main grape, although Trebbiano di Soave and Chardonnay are permitted in certain percentages. The weather is influenced by mists coming from the Po Valley and although the region is subject to mold and other grape diseases due to the moisture; Garganega has thick skins and is thus able to withstand it in good health.

The Prà winery, although only started in the early 1980’s, has come to be not only one of the top producers in the Soave appellation, but also one of the most important and visionary white wine makers in all of Italy (now expanding into red wine as well)! The winery is run by Graziano Prà, whose family owned their vineyards for generations but never commercialized the wines in bottles. The vineyards are situated in the heart of the appellation. Besides Soave, the winery also produces Valpolicella and Amarone.

The Prà holdings consist of 30 hectares in Soave and 7 hectares in Valpolicella. Graziano was always a big believer in natural viticulture and its positive effect on the wines and has farmed organically since the outset. He is now getting his “official” certification in Soave (in transition as of 2018); the grapes are harvested by hand.

The Staforte is a selection of choice Garganega bunches from the vineyards located on the top of the hills (Froscà, Froscarino, Ponsara and Val dell’Acqua), and aged on its lees in tank with batonnage for a minimum of 6 months and then for at least 12 more months in bottle.

TASTING NOTES

This is a particularly crisp and racy Soave with plenty of minerality and finesse. It shines with food and its mouthwatering juiciness allows it to be a terrific food partner. Notes of citrus, herbs, pear and flowers are subtle, yet inviting. The winery suggests that the Staforte can age for 5-10 years from the vintage date.

FOOD PAIRING

You can make an olive-oil based pasta with citrus, zucchini and parmesan or with sardines, calamari or shrimp scampi. Pan-seared fish or steamed clams are classic ideas. A vegetable dip with hummus, pasta with pesto, gnocchi with summer vegetables, or citrus/herbed chicken dishes are other easy partners.
