The nose expresses elegant aromas of orange blossoms, soft white fruit, light smoke, and short bread cookies. On the palate a clean, mineral quality accompanies black cherry, strawberry, orange peel and damson plum.
Like many wine regions around the world, the Venetian wines of northeastern Italy owe their excellence to the surrounding hills and lakes carved millions of years ago. The morianic soils left in the wake of receding glaciers give vineyards here distinct mineral complexity and character.
Veneto is the most populous and biggest denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) producer of the Tre Venezie, a conglomeration of 3 DOCs which also include Friuli-Venzia Giula and Trentino-Alto Adige / Südtirol. The region is protected from extreme weather as it is nestled in the foothills of the Alps.
Brothers Franco and Luciano Piona are at the helm of Calvachina, an estate founded in 1948 when their grandfather planted and vinified the first grapes on the property. The family's efforts helped develop the rustic village of Custoza, famous for its role in two battles fought for Italian independence, into its own appellation in the 1970s.
Historically, the Chiaretto rose was the free-run juice of the winery’s red. Franco and Luciano later moved to making the rose not as a by-product, but as a stand alone bottling. As such, they moved to harvesting these grapes about a week earlier than those destined for red production. This move preserves the wine’s unique fresh characteristic. After harvest, grapes are co-fermented in stainless steel tanks, with no Malolactic fermentation. The result is a crisp and fresh rose.

FOOD PAIRING
Pair this fresh rose with classic Venetian foods - risotto with fresh spring peas, roasted radicchio, fried sardines, or freshly made raviolis with cream sauce. It’s safe to imagine anything on the fresh side with olive oil, garlic, parsley, and capers, or switch gears and think mid-afternoon snack with fruit or gently-sweetened pastries.
