"Firm and concentrated, with blackberry and blueberry flavors that mingle with muscular tannins, black tea notes and a thread of minerality that adds a savory element. Fresh herb details emerge on the finish. Drink now through 2025." Wine Spectator, 90 Points
Mount Beautiful was founded by New Zealand scholar/entrepreneur David Teece and his wife Leigh. Their first vintage was released in 2007 and Sam Weaver is their consulting winemaker.
Canterbury is south and east of Marlborough, on the east side of the South Island of New Zealand. Grapes come from nine blocks of their estate fruit, from high elevation dense plantings that were put in the ground between 2004 & 2019. These are composed largely of Burgundy clones of Pinot Noir, as well as 11 other clones. Grapes are harvested at the end of March in extremely low yields to ensure the best quality fruit.
After fermenting by block in various-sized vessels, the wines undergo a long post-fermentation maceration until the tannins are integrated. Then they are gently pressed, keeping the free-run and press juice separate. Malolactic fermentation and aging takes place over ten months in French oak barrels, 25% new.
