Tasting Notes

This is quite aromatic with quince jam, white grapefruit, gooseberry and kiwi. This wine is crisp, fresh and lifted with bright and zingy citrus notes. Touches of tropical lychee and starfruit all complement its medium body and clean texture; stone fruits linger on the rounder finish. We like this wine a lot, it is elegant but still austere in style, yet clearly ripe fruited.

WINE INFORMATION

South Africa has one of the world’s oldest wine cultures dating back to 1652. This region is steeped in cultural diversity (it has eleven official languages), co-existing within one of the world’s most significant biodynamic plant kingdoms, the Cape Floral Kingdom. Founded in 2007, today Fat Barrel produces over 14 brands and represents a select group of independent South African estates. In 1992 Bob, founder of Fat Barrel, went to South Africa to sell US products but instead fell in love with the culture and decided to switch to selling South African products.

This wine is sustainably farmed. It is part of Sustainable Wine South Africa (SWSA), the alliance between the Wine and Spirit Board (WSB), the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme and Wines of South Africa (WoSA). Their goal is to promote sustainability in agricultural practices.

The university town of Stellenbosch is regarded as the South African home to wine making. The natural conditions of the region vary enormously but most vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of the Atlantic in summer. This is where the country's greatest concentration of dedicated individual estates is to be found. Some of the best wines come from the estates around the town itself since these are cooled by ocean breezes from False Bay, or from those higher up in the hills.
