Tasting Notes

Medium aromatics with apple, peach, slate, citrus, and raw almond. On the palate this Riesling is supple with peach, citrus and crushed rocks. Light florality on the long finish.

The Mosel is known for producing crisp, slatey wines that achieve a dynamic balance between racy acidity and ripe stone fruit.  Vineyards are very steep, south-facing to capture every bit of sun, and accessible only by climbing tiny steps (Treppchen).

After taking charge of operations in 1986, Johannes Schmitz began to restructure the small wine estate in Ürzig. He disposed of any vineyards of lesser quality and uprooted vines of other grape varieties, concentrating solely on the cultivation of Riesling. He also began to acquire more sites in prime locations, not deterred by the hard work these steep and often rocky parcels of land require.

Grapes for this wine are hand-harvested grown on ungrafted vines (Wurzelechten Reben) on a phylloxera-free site, inoculated with yeasts cultivated from indigenous yeast population.  The steep vineyard slope is cultivated with a chain-driven track vehicle, limited water supply – less than 75 hL/ha, high mineral content due to stony soil.  This Urziger is famous for both its red slate and dark blue slate - one of the greatest sites of the Mosel.
