Tasting Notes
Medium-plus aromas of tangerine, dried apricot, chalk, chamomile flowers and certain salinity. Medium in body with round texture and refreshing acidity. The aromas translate onto flavors with the addition of pear, ginger skin, white flowers and a lot more minerality. Medium-plus on the finish.
The Barroul family has been vignerons for 14 generations! They have owned their property since 1490 and work with old vines to make wonderfully powerful, yet elegant red wines that have become highly respected by the press and wine trade. In 1997, Louis Barroul (owner of Chateau Saint Cosme) started a negociant business in order to work with other “terroirs” in the Rhone, beyond their own vineyard land, that seemed to be under-exploited. Mr. Barroul is a very passionate wine grower and winemaker. He remains a small producer who wants to make pure and balanced wines that express their terroir with personality.
This is one of the first vintages from the Saint Cosme plantings on the limestone soils of Saint Martin, plots that had not been home to vines for 20 years. Although very close to Gigondas, the soils here have much higher proportion of limestone, making them uniquely suited to grow white grapes.
The fruit was pressed slowly, and then fermented in demi-muids and small casks, followed by ageing on the lees.
