Tasting Notes

Blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry, violets, bacon and graphite can be found on the nose. This medium-plus bodied, energetic Syrah is complex with layers of fruit, earth and spice notes joining together, remaining both ripe and fresh.

Château Saint Cosme, located in the Northern Rhône village of Gigondas, is the most ancient estate in the region.  Documents show that the estate has grown grapes since 1416.  Louis Barruol’s ancestors acquired it in 1570.  Louis took over in 1992 and began negociant activities in 1997.  His estate fruit is exclusively used for his Gigondas wines, and he sources fruit for his other wines, working closely with the growers throughout the season.  His negociant wines are simply labeled Saint Cosme.

The grapes for this Syrah were grown on soils of limestone, sand, and red clay.  Barruol has been using the same two Syrah sources for years: Vinsobres brings the freshness, the complexity, and the structure; the "villafranchiennes terraces" from the Gard area (huge terraces of rolling stones) add in the color, and the power of a southern syrah. The grapes are partially destemmed and aged in tank.
