Tasting Notes

This deeply colored wine offers powerful aromas of mulberry, mocha, sweet wood, and damson plum. In the mouth, it is juicy with moderate plus acidity. The aromas are echoed in the flavors—plum, dark chocolate, smoke, mulberry, and sweet wood. Tannins are fine-grained and nearly invisible, but they provide just enough structure. It is medium plus in body and length.

WINE INFORMATION

Bodegas Tridente has holdings of 40 parcels in the municipalities of Villanueva de Campeán and El Prego, planted primarily to Tempranillo with some Prieto Picudo as well. The winery produces five bottlings. Vines are as old as 130 years, with most around 100. The climate here is continental with icy winter winds and muggy summers. Soils are gravel over sand. Grapes for this wine are, like those on all family estates, are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine ages 15 months in French oak.

Gil Family Estates owns or controls approximately 1,766 hectares (approximately 4,364 acres) of vineyards throughout their 11 wineries scattered across 10 different DOs in Spain. Each winery has its own personality, but all are focused on sustainability, with most vineyards farmed organically. The first winery, Bodegas Juan Gil, was founded in 1916, when Juan Gil Giménez, a stone mason and great-grandfather of the present generation established the winery in the heart of Jumilla. However, it was his son Juan Gil Guerrero and  his grandsons, Juan Gil González and Paco Gil González, who really grew the business, acquiring vineyards in Castilla y León, Toro, Rueda, Bierzo, Montsant, and other areas. Over 100 years of winery history, spanning four generations of family ownership, included a turbulent restructuring of the family business in the late 1990s. This has led to the company’s rebirth into a global wine powerhouse. Today, all of the wineries under Gil Family Estates are run by brothers Miguel and Ángel Gil.
