Tasting Notes

Fruity-sweet aromas of candied strawberries, rose, cherry, watermelon, and high-end cotton candy. The palate, too, is fruit-sweet, with delightful red berries, cherry, and rose petals, following the nose. Moderate acidity keeps things fresh—the wine is rich but not heavy. A rosé for the deck more than the table.

Bodegas Torre Oria is located in the Utiel-Requena DO, in the southeast of Valencia not far from the coast. This is a hilly and arid land, with a continental climate influenced by proximity to the Mediterranean. Soils here are limestone and clay.

In the late 19th century, the Oria de Rueda family devoted themselves successfully to the silk business in Valencia. Some years later, they moved 60 km to the town of Requena. As the silk industry declined, they moved into grape growing and winemaking. The vineyards are located at high altitude, ranging from 650 to 905 meters above sea level, making for significant diurnal temperature variation that allows slow ripening of the fruit. The property has one of the highest concentrations of very old vines in Europe.

Grapes for this wine are estate grown in plots with 4,000 vines per hectare. Harvest is manual and takes place early in the morning to preserve the freshness of the fruit; the grapes are picked into small boxes of 15 kg. Upon arrival at the winery, the boxes are placed in a cold room (-10°C). When the fruit is well chilled, it is sorted manually box by box, then destemmed and crushed. The crush goes to stainless steel tanks, some of which go through a cold (0°C) maceration for two hours. All lots are pneumatically pressed very gently and the must is gravity settled for 24 hours. The clean juice goes to 400-liter new American oak barrels for fermentation at 16°C (quite cool). After primary fermentation, the wine rests on the lees until bottling.
