Tasting Notes

This Grenache has lovely minerality, with notes of black fruit, smokey herbs, and a touch of violets. It is big and full-bodied with fine grained tannins that give grip to the long finish. Awarded 96 points from Robert Parker. Estimated maturity 2016-2032.


The grapes in this wine were harvested from old vines in a single vineyard with soil rich in limestone.  The vineyard surrounding the chateau is farmed biodynamically.  Grapes were pressed whole cluster. The juice was aged in a variety of oak, from new to two year old barrels, for twelve months. 


The St. Cosme estate sits on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa and has been in existence since 1416. Winemaker Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1993 and began a negociant arm of the business  in 1997.  However, Le Claux comes from his own, very special estate grapes which enjoy extremely low yields and observant farming.
