Aromas are somewhat rustic, with charred wood, black currant and blackberry, licorice and black pepper. The flavors are round, with damson plum, blueberry, allspice, wood, and more black pepper. This is an intense and concentrated wine but neither clunky nor too heavy; there's a nice lift to the back end and good energy overall. Smooth and spicy, well-structured and warm, medium-plus in body with a longer finish.
Garnacha Tintorera is also known as Alicante Bouschet. The grape is a cross between Grenache and Petit Bouschet. The D.O. Almansa, where Bodegas Niel is located, is the highest producer of Garnacha Tintorera worldwide, which is indigenous to this region.
The grapes for this wine come from vineyards that are 30 years-old on average, planted in permeable lime-bearing soils that are poor in nutrients, and located on the town of Almansa at an altitude of 800-1,000 meters above sea level. The grapes are hand-harvested. The wine is fermented in stainless steel closed tanks. It was aged for more than 3 months in French oak barrels before bottling.
