Tasting Notes

From the producer: “Intense notes of fresh red fruit such as plums, cherries, blackberries and currants. Flavors consistent with the characteristics of this varietal seduce the mouth. With every sip, it unleashes its full potential of wonderfully balanced acidity, fruit, and a hint of oak combining silky tannins with an elegant structure and a long finish.”

WINE INFORMATION

Founded by Ernesto Catena in 2000, a fourth-generation winemaker of Italian descent, the beginning of one of four wineries, Tahuan began when Ernesto first became enchanted by the Tahuantinsuyu, the realm of the Inca culture. Ernesto and his team greatly admire the local Inca and Mayan traditions to the point where the majority of the buildings at the winery are inspired by pre-Columbian architecture. Through commerce and religion, the Incas conquered most of the Andean tribes, and in their quest for union they built a network of roads connecting all the Andean micro-cultures from Quito to Mendoza. It is on one such road that Ernesto first dreamed of honoring the culture of the Tahuantinsuyu, the quechua expression for “The Found Lands United”, with Tahuan wines. Ernesto believes that winemaking is an art form like painting or creating music and tries to reflect this throughout the winery.

Tahuan produces 100% varietal wines from selected old vineyards at the foothills of the Andes Mountains. After fermenting in small tanks, they are aged in American and French oak barrels for no less than eight months, and then aged in bottle until ready to be released.

The vineyard is certified organic and is farmed using the biodyanmics philosophy. Over the years, Ernesto has designed his biodynamic farm and vineyard as a sculpture to be gazed at from the sky; Similar to how the Mayas and the Incas designed their cities, to be enjoyed by the gods. His vineyard is surrounded by forests, animals, and rose gardens.

This wine is 50% French, 50% American second and third use oak for ten months.
