From the Producer: A quintessential expression of Nebbiolo from the Alto Piemonte, with brisk acidity, gripping tannins, and notes of red cherry and raspberry. While delicious in its youth, this wine gains gravitas and profundity with a few years of bottle age.
WINE INFORMATION
The Rovellotti family has been making wine in Ghemme, in Alto Piemonte for over 600 years. They can trace their roots in Ghemme to the latter stages of the 15th century. Sixty-six of the 200 people who carry the Rovellotti name live in and around Ghemme. Ghemme itself is a town of ancient tradition. At the city center is the “Ricetto,” a walled compound that served as a refuge for the people of the area during times of war. This citadel of 12,000 square meters was first mentioned in documents dating to the 10th century. Eventually, this brick-built structure evolved into a communal storehouse for the agricultural products native to the area with most of the surface being dedicated to wine. It is there that much of the work of producing the Rovellotti wines takes place.
The Rovellottis farm about 15 hectares in the southernmost sector of Ghemme called Barragiola; the Valplazza is a one hectare parcel planted to 100% Nebbiolo and those are the grapes that go into this wine.
In the 1980s, in coordination with the agricultural faculty at the University of Milan, the vineyards were converted to a special regimen with the purpose of achieving zero use of chemicals in order to re-establish the natural balance of environmental and ecological elements. A measure of the success was to see the black winged dragonfly return in 2017 after having left the region for 50 years.
This Nebbiolo is aged in stainless steel and bottled for a year before release. This is a small production with minimal exportation.
