WINE INFORMATION
The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco’s Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge’s production facility. The property passed through several different hands. By 1968, production had increased to just under 3000 cases per year, and in 1969, Paul Draper joined the partnership. A “practical winemaker” not and enologist, Draper lead a “hands off” approach to winemaking and grape growing. Today Ridge is the largest farmer of certified organic grapes in Sonoma County and the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.
This is the third vintage of the Ridge Grenache Blanc sourced from the sustainably farmed Adelaida Vineyard. Paso Robles is the epicenter of new Rhone plantings in California. The vineyard lies on the limestone hills of the Adelaida District, thirteen miles from the Pacific coast. Warm days, cool nights and balanced vines promote great acidity in the grapes.
Grapes are hand-harvested, then whole-cluster pressed and 100% fermented on the native yeasts with full malolactic fermentation on the naturally occurring bacteria. Then 88% of wine is aged in oak for 5 months in barrel (20% new, 80% two- to six-year-old); the remaining 12% is aged in concrete. The use of sulfur is kept to a minimum (35ppm at crush and 40ppm during aging.) It is pad filtered at bottling.
