Tasting Notes

This Malbec is unoaked in order to highlight the flavors of the grape. Aromas of plum, red cherry, wild herbs and a hint of spice. On the palate this wine is dry with flavors of blueberry, cherry, and a hint of forest floor. It is medium-plus in body with medium acidity an soft tannins.

The creator behind the winery was engineer, Alberto Zuccardi, who spent the majority of his time helping local growers with irrigation systems in their farms and vineyards throughout Mendoza. Zuccardi had established his own winery, Familia Zuccardi in 1963, and started Bodega Santa Julia as a way to honor and give back to the landscape, culture, and people of Mendoza. The winery is named for Julia Zuccardi, Alberto’s daughter, who began directing the bodega’s visitor center and restaurant in 2001.

??This series of both a white and red “natural” wine are crafted with minimal human interventions.  The fruit is hand harvested from practicing organic vineyards. There are no additional sulphites added in its production processes. Sulphites act as preservatives, given their antioxidant and antibacterial properties and they naturally occur in all fruit and other types of produce. This is also fermented with native ambient yeast; meaning that the winemaker does not select yeasts to give different properties to the wine, instead, only indigenous yeasts are used. This wine is unfined and unfiltered. It is also vegan.

The grapes are sourced from Finca Maipú, one of Santa Julia’s estates, here 175 ha of its vineyards have been certified organic since 2001. The “natural” wines have also been certified in the Fair for Life program, which ensures fair working conditions for the winery employees.

Santa Julia Winery the top certified organic winegrower in Argentina.
