Tasting Notes

Complex aromas of fig, tangerine, white flowers, mineral and toasted nuts join with hints of ginger and beeswax on the nose. The palate is equally intricate with a combination of juicy orchard and citrus fruits as well as discernible minerality, spiced baked fruits, and a touch of honey. The wine is quite robust with a persistent mineral-driven finish. A good representation of the St. Joseph Appellation Contrôlée (AC).

Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France. The appellation is known for its red wines made using Syrah grapes but it also produces white wines made using Roussanne and Marsanne grape varieties. Only 10% of the production is white wine.

Wine growers in the northern Rhône since 1491, the Chave family (currently helmed by Gérard and son Jean-Louis) represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region.

Circa, formally known as Celeste, is a blend of old-vine Roussane planted in Mauves on granitic slopes. Fermented in barrel and aged for 14 months in barriques.
